Bioinformatics
Technological progress in the life sciences makes it possible to obtain data in growing dimensions - both in terms of enormous volume, but also in terms of entirely new types of data.
This development not only presents bioinformatics with the challenge of developing efficient methods and high-performance infrastructures for data analysis. It also offers a constantly growing spectrum of novel scientific questions.
Such tasks require competences in different disciplines - from mathematics to biology to computer science. The philosophy of "everything under one roof" practised at Bielefeld University and the interdisciplinary research at the Faculty of Technology provide the ideal breeding ground for this.
Our Working Groups cover a wide variety of focal points in bioinformatics and cooperate with numerous other research areas at the university: Genome research, data science, machine learning, algorithms - to name just a few.
In addition, there are numerous links to other departments within and outside Bielefeld University, such as the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) and the focus of research on mathematical modelling (FSPM²). Research activities in the field of service science are bundled in the Institute for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (BIBI). And finally, scientific issues in the field of cloud computing are pursued and service and training are offered at the Bielefeld location of the Jülich Research Centre (IBG-5) in close cooperation with the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI) and the European ELIXIR network.
