Niklas Luhmann

Niklas-Luhmann-Visiting-Professorship

Niklas Luhmann is considered one of the greatest sociologists of the 20th century worldwide and has played a decisive role in the perception of Bielefeld University in the international academic and non-academic public.

Since 2005, together with the Rectorate, we have awarded the Niklas-Luhmann-Visiting-Professorship to internationally renowned social theorists in order to offer students and a wider academic and non-academic public the opportunity to familiarise themselves directly with authoritative and innovative theories.

Franz-Xaver-Kaufmann-Prize

Franz-Xaver Kaufmann is a founding member of our Faculty and was closely associated with us for over five decades. With his work in the fields of family and religious sociology and in particular in the sociological analysis of social policy, but also through his non-academic work, he has made an extraordinary contribution to the reputation of the Faculty of Sociology.

Since 2019, we have honoured young researchers at an early stage of their careers with the Franz-Xaver-Kaufmann-Prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros.

Zeitschrift für Soziologie

Since 1971, the Zeitschrift für Soziologie has been publishing articles from all areas of sociology that are of general sociological interest. It takes into account the plurality of theoretical and methodological approaches in empirical research and sociological theory development and guarantees a high level of transparency and comprehensibility in the selection and evaluation process of the articles to be published. Since the start date of 2022, all articles have been available in open access.

The journal has its editorial office at our Faculty. It appoints the six members of the supra-regional and pluralistic editorial board for a four-year term of office.
