Important information for your stay abroad

During a study-related stay abroad, you are responsible for your own insurance coverage and compliance with entry regulations. Please make sure that you have sufficient accident, liability and health insurance and inform yourself about the entry and visa regulations of your destination country. Accident, liability and health insurance is not provided by Bielefeld University.

Are you interested in studying abroad? There are many different ways to make this happen! The following information is especially aimed at student teachers. It is intended to provide you with guidance about opportunities for teaching-related study abroad.

If you want to study abroad, you have two options: Either you study at one of the cooperating Universities of Bielefeld University or at a foreign University with which there is no cooperation. You can find information on this under Cooperation Universities and Freemovers.

When is the right time to study abroad varies from person to person. It is best to discuss the timing of your study abroad with your Student Counselling Service. This will help you to see when a semester abroad fits best into your course of study.

Financing options

There are various funding programs with which you can (partially) finance your studies abroad. For detailed advice on financing options for your stay abroad, please contact the offices listed here.

Auslands-BAföG: All students have the possibility to apply for Auslands-BAföG for studying abroad. Even students who do not receive domestic BAföG should try to apply for Auslands-BAföG. If you are studying abroad as a freemover, you have the possibility to have tuition fees up to 4600 Euro covered loan-free by the Auslands-BAföG.

PROMOS: The DAAD [German Academic Exchange Service] partial scholarship PROMOS supports study stays worldwide (except at Universities with which an ERASMUS cooperation exists). The application is made through the International Office.

Further funding opportunities: You can also search for scholarship opportunities in the scholarship database of the DAAD [German Academic Exchange Service] and in the scholarship pilot of the BMBF. Another financing option for study stays are foundations: On the website of the Association of German Foundations you will find an overview of all foundations.

If you are unable to obtain financial assistance through a scholarship or if you require further financial assistance, you can finance your stay abroad with the help of the education loan program.
