I²SoS Working Group Bibliometrics

The interdisciplinary working group is concerned with bibliometric methods in manifold ways. Besides genuine bibliometric analysis, one focus of the group is to conduct projects in the social studies of science. On the one hand, the projects are based on the belief in the relevance of bibliometric analysis. One the other hand, they rest on the understanding of the limitations regarding their explanatory power. In research projects of the group, bibliometric analysis is therefore often applied in combination with other qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. Examples are the projects ‘OAUNI - Open Access publication at universities in Germany: Development and influencing factors’ and ‘Community-driven open access journals between scientific and economic requirements (CODRIA)’.

Moreover, the working group is engaged in the curation and development of bibliometric sources and data collections. This includes the institutional coding project, in the course of which the address data of German institutions are curated for the Web of Science and the Scopus bibliometric data bases. In the field of Open Access (OA) evidence sources, the working group contributed a Gold OA journal list as well as a Diamond OA journal list which are well reused in different contexts.

In addition, the working group is a member of the Competence Network for Bibliometrics. In this context, it is involved in building up an open citation data base that is free to use in collaboration with other partners.
