Application Process

Admission requirements are a degree in a programme of at least six semesters and a successful application. The degree programme is aimed at students of history, economics, sociology, or philosophy as well as natural and social sciences.

The documents of application need to include:

  • Certificate of BA degree (or comparable). If the applicant is in the final stages of a study programme, confirmation by the registrar's office is Sufficient.
  • Transcript of Records
  • CV (in tabular form) including information about previous education and practical experiences.
  • An exposé of two pages (no more than 1,000 words) that explains the motivation and the reasons for being interested in the programme. It should provide information about previous knowledge in science studies, or history, philosophy, or economics.
  • Proof of language skills in English and/or German. Sufficient language skills are proven by a relevant academic degree from either a German- or an English-language institution. Sufficient language skills can also be proven by English at the CEFR level of B2 and a level of German of B2. If, at the date of application, no German language skills can be proven, a level of C1 in English is requisite for admission; in that case, skills of German at the level of B1 need to be earned during the programme and proven upon receiving the degree.

Further information are found in the so-called Fächerspezifischen Bestimmungen, or Subject-specific regulations. The Subject-specific regulations (Fächerspezifische Bestimmungen or FsBs) are found on the websites of the "Information on the ISoS programme" of the Bielefeld Information System (BIS). Due to legal reasons the documents are in German.
