Courses of Studies

The formal requirements and information for the Master’s degree programs in Data Science (M.Sc.) and Statistical Sciences (M.Sc.) can be found on the information website of Bielefeld University. We want to give you a little personal insight from us student representatives:

Data Science

Digitization, big data, artificial intelligence and data science. We are confronted with these words more and more often in everyday life. But what actually makes a data science student?

We students want to give you a little insight here. Because of course we're not only interested in theoretical-statistical models. Although our course is much smaller than many others, we are all the more distinguished by our versatility. Regardless of the discipline in which we previously completed our bachelor's degree, we all share the joy of working as a modern detective in the data jungle. The course is not just about formulas, maximizing likelihoods and theories. Rather, it is about putting developed models into practice and programming them. The course is characterized by a wide range of elective courses and an interdisciplinary approach. It is therefore possible to deepen your own interests, to think outside the box and to question why logistic regression is actually not viewed as a regression model in computer science. There is a great exchange between students and teachers and everyone can take something away with them.

If you feel addressed or if you just enjoy computer science and statistics, you are wondering whether the Master in Data Science in Bielefeld is right for you or you have questions about student life in Bielefeld, then please do not hesitate to contact us. We'd love to hear from you!

Statistical Sciences

The word 'statistics' makes lots of students from different departments getting the chills. But statistics is only an auxiliary discipline; similar to a toolbox full of useful instruments to generate knowledge from data. The amount of information that is being collected in both science and business in order to make informed decisions increases dramatically. Therefore, the master program Statistical Sciences offers an incredible variety of applications across fields such as sociology, psychology and medicine. After all, they all depend on your expertise in the formulation, application and interpretation of tailored solutions.

During your journey in this programm, you will get equipped with the mathematical foundations as well as computer-based implementations and get the unique opportunity to get to know the application in various fields. You decide yourself where your individual focus lies and whether a stay abroad is desired. And just by the way: You may of course choose the lectures from the Data Science program ;-)

Bottom line: If you want to understand the background of statistical models and enjoy consulting people across all disciplines, this is the right programm for you.
