The Center for Mathematical Economics is a hub for innovative, interdisciplinary research in the social sciences as far as they admit mathematical formalization. In particular, the Center is one of the leading European research centers in the field of (mathematical) economic theory; the focus of its activities is the organization and development of new research projects and ideas.
IMW is convinced that mathematical methods are useful in all social sciences and therefore foster interdisciplinary research approaches in these areas, as the collaborations with linguistics, sociology and philosophy show.

Examples of IMW's activities include successful summer schools for PhD students and their participation in international scientific networks such as the DAAD network From Extreme Matter to Financial Markets. Furthermore, IMW is running a Visiting Professor program, which allows it to host leading researchers at the Center.

In addition, the IMW has significantly increased not only its workforce but also its reputation in the scientific community. It is currently represented in various editorial offices, including the top journals "Games and Economic Behavior", "Finance and Stochastics" and "Economic Theory". In addition, two scientific journals are published at the Institute: Herbert Dawid is one of the editors of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control and Frank Riedel publishes the Journal Mathematics and Financial Economics.

IMW considers teaching to be a fundamental and integral aspect of successful research. For this reason, the institute has developed a Master Program in Quantitative Economics, which is the foundation for the successful Graduate School BiGSEM.
