How do people communicate with each other and with machines?

General information

We investigate how people communicate with each other and with machines. Students learn to analyse authentic communication - whether oral or written, analogue or digital - using methods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional and Media Linguistics. Moreover, cognitive and social aspects of interaction are also included. The students apply the learned theories and methods by analysing authentic oral or written interactions in exercises and projects, both with instruction and independently.

Promoted knowledge and skills

• Knowledge of central theories and methods for describing and analysing communication
• Knowledge how we interact with each other in different situations, be it in the hospital, in the law firm or in the family
• Knowledge of conversation analysis, text linguistics, and media linguistic methods
• Application of these approaches to data from current research projects, and data material collected by the students themselves
• Ability to scientifically record and describe situated linguistic interaction and multimedia-based communication, like counseling, Tiktoks or chats
• Ability to reflect on scientific texts and methods based on the acquired knowledge and skills
• Critical reading, scientific discourse, teamwork
