Information about the profile Psycholinguistics

How are we able to speak and understand language, how does the mind construct and represent meaning, how do we acquire our first language and later languages, and how are all these processes affected by individual differences?

General information

Our research focuses on the experimental investigation and psycholinguistic modeling of language acquisition, production and perception in diverse speaker groups (multilingual speakers, speakers who stutter, speakers with speech and language impairment).

Promoted knowledge and skills

  • language acquisition

  • cognitive processses that underlie language production and perception

  • multilingual learning and processing

  • what kinds of representations are stored in the mental lexicon

  • linguistic creativity

  • experimental semantics & pragmatics

  • language models that integrate data from neurodiverse speakers

  • read and interpret theoretical and experimental psycholinguistic studies

  • understand how we can tap into different processes using different experimental paradigms (e.g., reading studies vs. picture naming) and techniques (e.g., behavioural studies, eye-tracking, EEG, fMRI) and how to choose between them for your study

  • plan, design and conduct your own experimental psycholinguistic study

Additional information

In this profile, you will be guided to develop the question you are most interested in.
You will learn the most cutting-edge methods to investigate your research questions and model your data with reasoned psycholinguistic theories and models. You will have the opportunity to make use of our wide range of advanced labs, equipment and technology, such as the neuroscientific methods EEG/ERPs, eyetracking, articulography, the speech and computer labs, computational modelling or a combination of these.
