Semester abroad

The planned stay abroad of one semester at a partner institution takes into account the international orientation of "Interdisciplinary Studies of Science (ISoS)". The obligation to attend the semester abroad can be dropped if a good reason is given. Such reasons include a stay abroad in the bachelor's program of at least two semesters or the acquisition of the BA abroad as well as personal reasons. The reasons may be stated and explained in writing.

For the semester abroad, preference should be given to partner institutions with which cooperation agreements exist. The semester abroad should be completed in the third semester. The credit points earned abroad are taken into account for the main modules.

Stays abroad proceed through the teaching units rather than the interdisciplinary ISoS program. You need to apply to the Departments of History, Philosophy, or Sociology, respectively, for being nominated for an Erasmus stay. For a nomination through the Department of Philosophy, please contact Martin Carrier (martin.carrier@uni-bielefeld.de) or Kinga Golus (kinga.golus@uni-bielefeld.de).

Further Information

The application deadline for stays abroad is January 31 for stays starting in the winter semes-ter of the same year. Students beginning the ISoS study program in the winter semester should, therefore, start planning their stay abroad in the third semester right at the first semester. Please note in your planning the different lecture periods at the individual universities.

The application should include a letter of motivation (preferentially in English), a CV (please include the date of birth), the Transcript of Records, proof of the required language skills, and the student's identification card number. Please also name two of your lecturers as reference persons (all you need is contact information - no refer-ence letters are required). Please name a second and third choice next to your desired university; Please also indicate whether you would like to go abroad for one, possibly two or certainly two semesters.

If possible, please send the application in a single PDF file ("Surname_Application.pdf") to the ERASMUS Program Officer.

The selection is made based on previous study achievements (Transcript of Records) and the presentation of motivation and the pursued study goals in the letter of motivation.

Detailed information on the modalities and individual steps of the exchange can be found on the page Erasmus+ - where you will find information on obtaining information, the application process and the recognition of study achievements as well as (for most European ex-change partners) information on the exchange program ERASMUS +.

  International Office: "ERASMUS+"

Before Semester Abroad

If the application for nomination is successful, the International Office (IO) forwards your application to the host university for confirmation.

Before starting your stay abroad, you should specify your study plans and look for possible courses. You should target the acquisition of about 30 ECTS points within one semester. Please dis-cuss your plans in advance with the programme officer.

If the stay abroad is within the framework of the ERASMUS + programme, a so-called Learning Agreement (LA) is concluded before the stay, which specifies the study plan and the recognition of study achievements. The LA can be changed within the first 5 weeks of a semester; changes can be confirmed by email. The LA and amendments must be confirmed by the student, the Programme Officer of the host university, and by the Programme Officer and the Recognition Of-ficer of the home university.

Subject to the approval of the host university, courses outside the subject area may be taken as part of the Individual Supplementary Area. Courses in the Individual Supplementary Area that have been taken abroad need not add up to entire modules. In principle, it is also possible to write the master's thesis at the host university.

Recognition

Course achievements acquired abroad are recognized in a university-wide procedure. Credit points gained need to be officially confirmed. Successfully completed courses are listed in the Transcript of Records issued by the host university. If you have dropped out of a course, you may still be able to get some recognition. Please have such achievements confirmed by a lecturer from the host university. A form for the semester abroad ("Confirmation of Course Achievements") can be found under Downloads in the menu on the left.

Course descriptions or module manuals are required for recognizing course achievements. They can be provided by PDFs or links to official websites (screenshots or Word files are unsuitable as evidence). You find additional information and a link to the relevant forms: application forms.

Please sign your application for recognition at the end of the stay abroad together with the documents mentioned (Transcript of Records, possibly Confirmations of Course Achievements, course descriptions (links) and module manuals) and submit it to the examination office (Ms. Oldenburg) as a PDF. If you have any questions, please contact the programme manager in advance.

Contact

The contact person for the stays abroad is the team of the International Office, especially Ms. Karin Kruse and Ms. Monika Bokermann. The programme and recognition officer for ISoS is Dr. Carsten Reinhardt.
