Anniversary Celebration

Since its founding in 1976, the Faculty of Biology has been dedicated to one of science’s most fascinating questions: What holds life together at its very core? What began five decades ago has grown into a globally connected, research-intensive hub and a vibrant center for innovative teaching, with the goal of exploring, understanding, and preserving the fundamentals of life.

From genes and molecules to the behavior of complex organisms and global ecosystems: Our scientists are investigating the pressing biological questions of our time. Bolstered by state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, high-profile externally funded projects, and prestigious awards, we look back on 50 years of groundbreaking discoveries—and look resolutely toward the future.

We cordially invite the university community and all citizens to celebrate this milestone with us: Experience cutting-edge research up close, discover our faculty’s historical milestones, and join us in discussing the future of biology. We look forward to seeing you there!

50 Years of Biology at Bielefeld University—and there is plenty to discover!

Starting at 2:00 p.m.: The Faculty of Biology invites you to a colorful variety of workshops, guided tours, and hands-on activities. We meet at the Y Building. Whether molecular genetic food analysis, heart health and resuscitation, small robots, chemical ecology, or the fascinating world of greenhouses, collections, and laboratories – there is biology here to marvel at, try out, and explore. Anyone who has always wanted to take a look behind the scenes can discover the UniZoo, biological collections, laboratories, and many other exciting places.

Starting at 4:30 p.m.: Two presentations will showcase research in Bielefeld on Bielefeld’s animals and plants: “Gelb und schwarz, ihr ahnt es schon, ist kein Hund, kein Has‘, kein Luftballon.” (on research involving fire salamanders) and “Wurmkraut in Bielefeld, giftig, duftend, vielfältig” (on research involving plants).
