Digitalisation is increasingly permeating all areas of medicine and its integration into medical education is essential. At Bielefeld University, digital medicine is not just a supplementary element, but an independent subject within the model degree programme in human medicine. This concept should be established as a future-oriented standard in the medical degree programme.
The following question arises: Why should medical training not benefit from and participate in the digital transformation? Digital technologies can improve the quality of care, particularly in structurally weak regions. The concept of the tele-emergency doctor illustrates the urgent need for digital applications in medicine and their potential to optimise patient care.
Bielefeld University has taken an innovative step by integrating digital medicine into its training programme. The digitalisation of medicine is progressing inexorably and prospective doctors must be integrated into this process at an early stage. It is not about uncritically adopting or categorically rejecting digital technologies, but about understanding their benefits and limitations and weighing up the consequences for medical decision-making.
