Philosophers in Bielefeld pursue research projects from all areas of philosophy - from the theory of action, ethics and political philosophy to the philosophy of language and the theory of science. Bielefeld's philosophy is particularly well known for its contributions to the systematic debates of contemporary philosophy in the analytical tradition. On site, this diversity of research is reflected in an intensive culture of discussion and conferences. The core of the Department of Philosophy is currently formed by six professorships of philosophy, around which the research areas are grouped. Translated with (free version)

In addition, there are many other employees active in research and teaching, lecturers, guest researchers and emeriti.

You can find more details about current research projects on our research page and on the websites of the philosophers working here.

In teaching, we focus on the needs of our students. Personal contact in small groups, the greatest possible freedom of choice, and the research proximity of the courses are particularly important to us.

Our Bachelor's program with its profiles „Fachwissenschaft“, „Lehramt Gymnasium, Gesamtschule“ and "Lehramt Haupt-, Real, Sekundar-, Gesamtschule" focuses on the broad transfer of knowledge and skills. The classics of the history of philosophy from Plato to Kant to Rawls play a role here, as do questions of content in the current debate. Also, philosophical skills in analysis and presentation are taught in a targeted manner. This takes place particularly in the intensively supervised courses of the first year of study.

Students in our Master's program are largely free to design their studies, setting selected thematic priorities, and thus acquiring the ideal prerequisites for a doctorate in philosophy. They are supported by intensive supervision and feedback: in the workshop seminars all the papers are discussed intensively and in the presentation workshop the lectures of the Master's students are supervised.

The department supports its talented students on their academic career path through several international exchange programs. For this purpose, it invites an internationally renowned philosopher to the Masterclass Philosophy every year.

As part of the doctoral studies program, the Department of Philosophy offers a structured doctoral phase whose requirements are individually tailored to the research project and the qualification profile of the doctoral candidate.
