The working group focuses on the reflection of science using the methods of bibliometric research. The subject of investigation is the ongoing digitalization of science and the shift towards greater openness in research processes and outcomes (Open Science and Open Access). The group's research projects are driven, on the one hand, by the conviction of the relevance of bibliometric analyses and, on the other, by the recognition of their limitations. Therefore, the group's research typically combines qualitative and quantitative methods within sophisticated mixed-methods study designs. Examples include the ongoing project Repercussions of Open Access on Research Assessment (ROARA), as well as the two completed projects OAUNI – Development and Influencing Factors of Open Access Publishing at Universities in Germany and Community-Driven Open Access Journals Between Scientific and Resource-Related Demands (CODRIA).
In addition, the working group is also committed to the curation and further development of bibliometric data sources and resources. As a member of the Competence Network for Bibliometrics, it has long provided cleaned address data for the Web of Science and Scopus databases to its partner organizations. In collaboration with four other partners, the group is also working—based on OpenAlex—on establishing an open and freely accessible bibliometric database.
