Gina-Marie Tschampa, a Master of Education student, has been awarded third place in the Hans Albert Institute's essay competition for her essay "The Politics of Happiness: Promoting Happiness as an Objective of Government Action."
The essay argues for the necessity of considering citizens' subjective well-being in political decision-making. It demonstrates why happiness should be at the center of every political decision and develops the concepts of “happiness-promoting” and “happiness-inhibiting” political action. Tschampa contends that it is the responsibility of governments to shape life within society in such a way that every individual has the best possible opportunity to achieve happiness.
The overarching theme of the competition was “What Would a Good Future Look Like?” Further information about the call for submissions can be found here: https://hans-albert-institut.de/essaywettbewerb-wie-waere-eine-gute-zukunft
The Department of Philosophy warmly congratulates Ms. Tschampa on this outstanding achievement.

In 1977, he was appointed to Bielefeld University's third professorship in philosophy. Holding the chair in the field of Philosophy of Language, he remained in this position until his retirement in February 2006.

Prof. Christian Nimtz
Managing Director of the Department of Philosophy
With her Master’s thesis in the M.A. Philosophy program, Sarah Heide has been awarded the Claudia Huerkamp Award for Master’s Theses 2025 of the Faculty of History, Philosophy, and Theology. The thesis is titled “Parentification as a Problem for Filial Responsibility. An Ethical Assessment of the Situation of Children in Families with Struggling Parents.” In it, she addresses the question of whether children should take on responsibility for their parents when the parents are no longer able to care for themselves and their children in an outstanding way. This is the second time Sarah Heide has received the faculty’s award for final theses.
The Department of Philosophy warmly congratulates her on this exceptional achievement.
Philosophy can be studied in many different ways at Bielefeld: The Department of Philosophy offers Bachelor's, Master's and teacher training programs, as well as the international master program Interdisciplinary Studies of Science (ISoS).
