The ZAB offers students of all disciplines the opportunity to write their thesis or project with us. The topics offered can be written as a bachelor's or master's thesis with adapted scope of functions. Likewise, project work is possible if this is included in the curricula of the degree programme.
We can also assist with papers, or if you have an idea for a topic yourself, you can also contact us directly by email at zab@uni-bielefeld.de.

Since the UniMaps project offers a larger number of papers, it is shown separately again below.

We are offering the opportunity to interested students to write their Bachelor/ Master thesis with us. We have set out some suggestions for topics. Each of the following can be written as a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, as appropriate to functional scope. The work can also be completed as a project as part of the Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science and the Master's degree program in Intelligent Interactive Systems.

Please direct any enquiries by email to unimaps@uni-bielefeld.de

We do not currently have any theses on the subject of UniMaps.

Other final theses

1. Development of an Ilias plugin for accessibility checking

In the DACHS project, a platform is being developed on which teaching staff, instructors, lectures can check their courses for Accessibility from learning management systems (LMS). In the context of this work, a plugin for the LMS Ilias is to be developed, which forms the interface between the DACHS portal and Ilias. An authentication shall be implemented, with which the accounts in both platforms can be connected with each other. Furthermore, all necessary information shall be extracted from the LMS and sent to the DACHS portal. The plugin should also enable students to send feedback to the teaching staff, instructors, lectures, which will also be transferred to the DACHS portal.

2. Penetration testing of the ZAB virtualisation server

A virtualisation server is operated in the accessibility services (ZAB), on which various virtual machines run for different services and projects ending dates. One example of this is the UniMaps server or the DACHS portal. The aim of this thesis is to systematically analyse the security of this infrastructure.
A penetration test of the virtualisation server and the VMs running on it is to be carried out as part of the bachelor thesis. The standards and tools for penetration tests are to be researched and then the tests are to be carried out using these. Finally, the results will be analysed and concrete recommendations for improving the security architecture and hardening the systems will be derived.

3. Development of a browser plugin to check for ableist language

The language compass of the accessibility services (ZAB) uses a backend that can automatically analyse texts for ableist language. To make this functionality accessible at a low threshold, a browser plugin is to be developed that can be used directly while surfing.
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to design and implement a browser plugin (for Firefox and Chrome) that analyses the content of websites and checks for ableist language. The plugin should utilise the existing logic of the language compass and implement a suitable interface for communication. In addition, an accessible presentation of the results is to be developed, for example by highlighting the text or summarising the evaluation.

4 Automated website tests and generation of static websites

The webperf tool enables automated tests of websites with regard to performance, best practices, accessibility and other quality criteria. The test results are available as json or Markdown, but are not automatically displayed as a website.
This bachelor thesis aims to develop a workflow that automatically tests websites using webperf and generates static websites from the results. These should present the test results clearly and comprehensibly in the form of dashboards and individual reports for each tested website. In addition to the technical implementation, questions of visualisation, automation (e.g. regular test runs) and maintainability of the generated pages will also be considered.
