Philosophy of Science at Bielefeld University has two core areas. On the one hand, we engage in the practices of the life sciences (e.g., biology, psychology, neuroscience and medicine) and address various methodological, conceptual and metaphysical questions. On the other hand, we share an interest in questions concerning the relations between science and society, science and values, and science in the context of application. In both core areas our research is characterized by a practice-oriented, interdisciplinary approach.

Philosophy of Science is a key area of the Institute for Studies of Science (ISoS), a Central Academic Institute of Bielefeld University. The ISoS is a place where science-reflective research and teaching is fostered. The members of the ISoS are united by an integrative, interdisciplinary and immersive research approach: research at the ISoS brings together various disciplines that reflect on science (especially historical, philosophical and sociological) (integrative), takes place in close cooperation with researchers (interdisciplinary) and views science as interwoven with society and aims to be socially relevant (immersive).
The Philosophy of Science research group works closely with Prof. Dr. Lara Keuck's History and Philosophy of Medicine research group.
The Department of Philosophy is part of the PhilInBioMed network. The network aims at promoting philosophy in the biological and medical sciences, a co-production of knowledge by the direct interactions of philosophers, biologists, and medical doctors.
The Joint Institute for Individualisation in a Changing Environment (JICE) unites researchers who explore individualization in changing environments in an interdisciplinary discourse between the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences.
The Philosophy of the Life Sciences (PhilLiSci) colloquium brings together advanced Master's students, doctoral students, postdocs and professors working in Philosophy of the Life Sciences (and related fields). We mainly discuss drafts of current research articles, but also read relevant texts by other philosophers, discuss research proposals or give mock presentations. The colloquium is led by Prof. Dr. Marie I. Kaiser, J.-Prof. Dr. Alkistis Elliott-Graves and Prof. Dr. Lara Keuck.
If you are interested in participating in the PhilLiSci colloquium, please contact Marie I. Kaiser via email (kaiser.m@uni-bielefeld.de). Usually all meetings are hybrid (Zoom link on request).
(Wednesdays 14:00 – 16:00)
The Institute for Studies of Science (ISoS) organizes a lecture series that brings together science researchers from Bielefeld University as well as external, national and international experts.
(Tuesdays 16:00 – 18:00)
