Press release: Attention and trust are particularly effective against juvenile delinquency

Scientists present results of the long-term study "Crime in the Modern City Social disadvantages, family violence, a poor school climate or the consumption of violent media such as movies and computer games have little or no direct effect on the possible delinquent behavior of adolescents and young adults. However, these factors often result in the affected adolescents viewing the commission of violent acts as harmless and spending their time with appropriately conspicuous friends - which in turn is clearly linked to the commission of crimes. These are two of the most important findings of the long-term study "Crime in the Modern City" led by criminologist Prof. Dr. Klaus Boers (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, WWU) and sociologist Prof. Dr. Jost Reinecke (Bielefeld University). The study, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) over a period of almost 20 years, is the only long-term study in Germany and one of the few internationally to examine delinquent behavior from late childhood to early adulthood. The study differs from previous investigations primarily in that one-time surveys only provided snapshots, but said nothing about the development of delinquency.
