The Department of Finance and Insurance at Bielefeld University brings together internationally recognized research in mathematical finance and economic theory, as well as in corporate finance and sustainability. Its members -- Prof. Dr. Giorgio Ferrari, Prof. Dr. Peter Limbach, Prof. Dr. Frank Riedel, and Prof. Dr. Maren Schmeck -- publish in leading journals across economics, finance and accounting, mathematical finance, insurance mathematics, applied mathematics, and control theory, including Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science, The Accounting Review, Energy Economics, Mathematical Finance, Finance and Stochastics, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, The Annals of Applied Probability, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, and Operations Research.
The department combines rigorous theoretical modeling with state-of-the-art empirical methods to study fundamental questions in finance, corporate governance, and sustainability. A particular focus lies on uncertainty and its role in financial decision-making and sustainable outcomes. By integrating theory and empirics rather than treating them as separate research agendas, the department aims to advance financial economics in a comprehensive and forward-looking way.
The department is actively engaged in the national and international scientific community through service on editorial boards (including Economic Theory and Mathematics and Financial Economics) and participation in the boards of scientific associations such as DGVFM and AMaMeF. Its members contribute to shaping the research profile of Bielefeld University through the Focus Areas QUAMU and ESyMath, as well as the planned Profile Area MICoS, and serve as principal investigators in the Collaborative Research Center 1283 and the Research Training Group 2865.
