With its more than 330.000 residents, Bielefeld is among the 20 largest cities in Germany. At the same time it is the economic and cultural centerpiece of the region East-Westphalia (Ostwestfalen). The city's cultural life includes excellent art exhibitions in the »Kunsthalle« and numerous music and theatre venues. There are also sights and attractions like the medieval castle »Sparrenburg«, the zoo in Olderdissen or the historic quarter of the town, for example. Thanks to a good infrastructure, Bielefeld is well connected to surrounding cities as well as to places like Berlin or Cologne. The extensive short-range transit enables both university guests and students to get fairly quick to the city center. With multifaceted cultural programs and recreation offers, numerous parks and the Teutoburg Forest just around the corner the city provides student as well as university members with a vibrant and varied setting to work, live and feel at ease.

Bielefeld University was founded in 1967 and has about 19.000 students at the moment. The university in itself combines many advantages that make sure that studying and living in Bielefeld turns out to be a success:
