What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology focuses on the functions of the brain. These include, for example, attention, memory, language skills including numerical processing and arithmetic, executive functions (such as planning and organizing), visual perception, social interaction, and emotional regulation.

All of these functions can be impaired by diseases or accidents that affect the brain. Neuropsychological diagnostics aim to identify these impairments. Neuropsychological therapy is used to treat them.

The methods we use are diverse: computer-based training, individual sessions, group sessions, and occasionally even sessions held outside the clinic. The goals of therapy are just as varied. Some patients receive support in organizing their daily life at home, while others are guided through reintegration into school, vocational training, or work. Treatment usually takes place in our clinic, and we assign personalized tasks for patients to complete between sessions.

Diagnostics

At the beginning, during the course, and/or at the end of treatment, we conduct comprehensive neuropsychological diagnostics. These include medical history, third-party anamnesis (e.g. from relatives), behavioral observations, and standardized testing procedures. The assessments include both paper-and-pencil tasks and computer-based procedures.

Following the diagnostic process, you will receive feedback on the results. We will then discuss the next steps with you, in particular whether further treatment in our outpatient clinic is possible and appropriate.

Therapy

We offer individual and group therapy based on the latest clinical guidelines. Treatment approaches are selected individually to suit each patient’s needs and may include:

  • Restorative approaches, which aim to restore and improve lost or impaired functions (e.g., attention skills)
  • Compensatory approaches, which help patients cope with limitations and manage daily life despite impairments (e.g., using memory aids for memory deficits)
  • Integrative approaches, which incorporate methods from other psychotherapy modalities (e.g., promoting positive activities in cases of organic affective disorders)

Examples of Neuropsychological Therapies are:

  • Visual exploration training for neglect
  • Computer-based cognitive training to improve attentional performance
  • Guidance on the use of memory aids and establishing them in everyday life
  • Support with reintegration into work
  • Assistance with the implementation of PACING in the context of CFS following post-Covid
  • Cognitive stimulation therapy for early-stage dementia
  • Psychotherapeutic interventions for depression and anxiety following a stroke

Hospitation by Students

Usually, our treatments are accompanied by students of clinical psychology and psychotherapy as part of educational and observational therapies. This means that students either observe or are actively involved in the treatment and carry out parts of the treatment independently under the guidance of experienced therapists.
