Projects
BiGSEM cooperates with various national and international universities on different levels.
It coordinates European research training programmes with up to seven European partner universities. Doctoral students are seeking for a double/joint degree, participate in a European programme and spend one academic year at the second degree granting university.
Another cooperation is given by the QED programme. Young researchers get the opportunity to meet once a year to exchange their research results during a workshop.

Bielefeld University together with University of Duisburg-Essen successfully applied for a new Research Training Group (RTG 2951)
'Cross-border Labour Markets: Transnational Market Makers, Infrastructures, Institutions' funded by the DFG for 5 years
from April 1, 2024 on. The Research Training Group is accepting 22 doctoral candidates and one post-doc within its

The IMW together with the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics applied successfully for a new Research Training Group (RTG 2865) Coping with Uncertainty in Dynamic Economies (CUDE) funded by the DFG for 5 years.
24 doctoral candidates in two cohorts will engage in developing economic and mathematical methods to deal with uncertainty. The first cohorts starts in fall 2023. All doctoral candidates become members of BiGSEM.

- Value of Information
The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at the Bielefeld University formed a research cooperation with the University of Oldenburg and the Helmholtz-Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB).
The cooperation starts in January 2021 with the joint research project “Value of Information” (VoI). This interdisciplinary project combines the strengths of all parties and allows for a close collaboration and interaction. Central to the project is the question of the value of (additional) information and its consequences for optimal decision-making in the context of sustainability, biodiversity, and nature conservation policies. The project is led by PD Dr. Thorsten Upmann.
- Economic Policy in Complex Environments (EPOC), ITN, EJD Marie S.-Curie Action
Many of the main challenges Europe currently faces, like mitigating climate change, fostering a transition to a low-carbon economy, or governing the development, diffusion of new technologies are difficult to deal with because of their dynamic complex nature.
The Innovative Training Network EPOC aims at advancing the state-of-the-art and the applicability of computationally intensive methods for decision and policy analysis in such complex and uncertain environments. Particular focus will be on the application of such methods in the domains of climate change and innovation.

Expectations play a crucial role in Economics…
How will the stock market develop? Will I get a pay rise next year? When will the Central Bank change its interest rate policies? Expectations influence the behavior of many economic decision makers. The recent financial and economic crisis has highlighted again the importance of expectation dynamics for economic development as well as for the success of firm strategies and public policies. However, many aspects of the formation and implication expectations in Economics are still not well understood. The Innovative Training Network ExSIDE aims at improving our understanding of the role of expectation formation and social influence for economic dynamics and for the optimal design of economic policy.

- European Doctorate in Economics – Excellence and Mobility (EDEEM)
EDEEM is a consortium composed of six European universities, namely Universiteit van Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Universität Bielefeld (Germany), Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France) and Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Italy). It offers doctoral students a framework for a structered study programme together with the preparation of a doctoral thesis carried at two universities of the consortium. A successful completion of the programme leads to a double respectively joint degree.
