3. September 2026: Talk: "Digital can be simple too! Accessible websites for people with learning disabilities"

On Thursday 3. September 2026, from 10.00 to 11.30 am, speakers Susanne Zornow and Britt Uhlenbrok Jensen will demonstrate how websites can be designed to be clear, well-organised and user-friendly. To this end, they will present, amongst other things, findings from the #LeichtOnline project run by Lebenshilfe Hamburg, as well as a practical guide and a new best-practice website.

Sustainable improvements to accessibility within the public administration

To ensure the sustainable improvement of accessibility, accessibility audits are carried out and processes and solutions are developed to enhance the accessibility of (web) applications, systems and software solutions. Steps are taken as early as the procurement process to ensure that these meet accessibility criteria. Furthermore, consultancy and testing are carried out throughout the development process. In addition, the competence centre offers training and consultation to raise staff awareness of the issue, provide them with the necessary skills and thus embed accessibility in practice.

This covers the entire administrative process of the universities and integrates digital accessibility into specialist procedures and processes. All users also benefit from improved usability, which is achieved through the implementation of accessibility criteria. To this end, the Competence Centre provides pooled expertise and a support and service system.

The Competence Centre offers various services to support you in implementing digital accessibility.

General conditions: Universities are legally obliged to make their digital services accessible in accordance with the E-Government Act and the associated laws on equal participation of people with disabilities, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), the North Rhine-Westphalia Disability Equality Act (BGG NRW) and the North Rhine-Westphalia Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (BITVNRW).

So far, however, the applications, systems and specialised procedures used have not systematically paid attention to accessibility, which significantly limits the opportunities for people with disabilities to participate. The Competence Centre for Accessible Digital University Administration.NRW has the task of closing this gap and ensuring digital accessibility at universities.
