Interdisciplinarity at ZiF

We believe in interdisciplinarity as a key factor for successful research and scientific breakthroughs. What does that mean specifically for and at ZiF? This page helps you explore how ZiF drives interdisciplinary research.

At ZiF, we approach interdisciplinarity in three complementary ways: by advancing the scholarly understanding of interdisciplinary research, by looking back on decades of experience in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and by enabling new forms of interdisciplinary research and exchange. These activities are closely interrelated. Insights into interdisciplinary research inform the reflection on past experiences, while both scholarly inquiry and accumulated practical experience can help shape the conditions for future collaboration.

Advancing the Research on Interdisciplinarity

  • Graphic design of the Special Call

Fellowships for the research group "Practices of Interdisciplinary Research"

Marking its 60th anniversary in 2028, ZiF will turn its attention to its own institutional mission by making interdisciplinarity itself the object of reflection. We are offering 8 to 10 fellowships for researchers whose work advances the study of interdisciplinary research. Fellows will spend six months at ZiF as members of the ZiF-curated research group “Practices of Interdisciplinary Research“.

Deadline for Application: 9 February 2027

  • Graphic design of the Lecture Series

Lecture series "Interdisciplinarity in Scientific Research"

ZiF and the Institute for Studies of Science (ISoS) have jointly organised the lecture series "Interdisciplinarity in Scientific Research – Perspectives from Practice and Science Studies" to explore interdisciplinarity in both theory and practice.

This lecture series brings together theoretical reflections and practical experiences with interdisciplinarity in scientific research. What distinguishes interdisciplinary from multidisciplinary research? How is knowledge integrated across disciplinary boundaries? How do interdisciplinary fields emerge and stabilise? How do researchers navigate conflicting methods, standards, and epistemic cultures in collaborative settings?

    Communication platforms

ZiF has established different communication channels that foster the exchange on both interdisciplinary research and the theoretical reflection of interdisciplinarity.

Looking Back – Learning from 60 Years of Collaborative Practice

Over nearly 60 years since ZiF was founded in 1968, much has changed; but then, some things remained rather consistent. In published materials produced by research groups and ZiF members – including materials like blog posts, podcast episodes, videos – that specifically focus on the subject of interdisciplinary collaboration, we found that certain aspects recur in interdisciplinary settings and remain remarkably stable.

Listed below are the main categories that appear repeatedly throughout the years.

  • Communication & Language

Shared understanding requires more than using the same words. Making differences in concepts and disciplinary assumptions explicit is a crucial step towards meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Different Perspectives

Bringing different disciplinary perspectives together can open up new questions, methods, and ways of interpreting evidence. Their value lies in exploring what becomes possible through their encounter.

  • Uncertainties, Surprises, Experiments

Unexpected difficulties and uncertainties are part of interdisciplinary research. They can become productive opportunities to question assumptions, experiment with ideas, and discover new approaches.

  • Patience & Resilience

Interdisciplinary collaboration takes time and sustained effort, often involving detours and setbacks. By providing dedicated time and space to work through these challenges, ZiF creates conditions for mutual understanding and productive collaboration.

  • Categories of Interdisciplinarity

Interdisciplinary research does not take a single form. Recognising the different ways in which disciplines relate to one another helps to clarify the diverse possibilities and challenges of collaboration.

  • Interdisciplinary Work as a Process

Collaboration often unfolds in distinct phases, each with its own opportunities and challenges. A clear understanding of these phases can help researchers anticipate difficulties, navigate transitions, and foster the development of productive collaborations.

To date, these terms are the most frequently discussed ones. Challenges arise because of 'heterogeneous terminology and technical jargon' and 'concepts that, while used by all disciplines, carry different connotations (Research Group Report 2004). Ideally, such different meanings become obvious soon and the group develops some shared language (see Voßkamp, Utopieforschung 1982).

At the same time, it is precisely these different perspectives and points of view that enrich interdisciplinary work and make it particularly productive. The convergence of different perspectives (see Gülich, interview 2018) opens up 'new dimensions' (Büntgen, podcast 2024) and provides access to new methods and data (see Bünstorf and Menke, blog post 2021; Borrelli and Kmak, podcast 2024).

'In fact, I often saw interdisciplinarity come to life precisely in situations where not everything worked out right away.' (Triebel, Annual Report 1978, translated)

Uncertainty can be uncomfortable, but coping with and even taking advantage of this irritation can lead up to productive results. At the same time, it is possible to prevent some uncertainties by being guided through the 'merger process', e.g. by a coach.

Research group members need patience and endurance to work together successfully (see Roggenhofer, ZiF-Mitteilungen 2008), especially when facing possible disappointment.

Interdisciplinary research is not something that can be done casually or in addition to other work. According to Jürgen Kocka, 'interdisciplinarity [...] takes time, and necessitates detours'. 'One should not burden interdisciplinary work with excessive expectations' (Kocka, Realität und Ideologie 1991).

On a theoretical level, there are repeated attempts to develop categorizations of interdisciplinarity. The distinction between 'small-scale' and 'large-scale' interdisciplinarity is based on the degree of proximity between the collaborating disciplines (cf. Weinrich, interview 2018; Gülich, interview 2018).

Britta Padberg, on the other hand, develops a typology in which she distinguishes six different types of interdisciplinarity based on the nature of the relationship between the individual disciplines. For example, she distinguishes 'Egalitarian Collaboration' from 'Subordinative Interdisciplinarity' or 'Complementary Interdisciplinarity' (Padberg, article 2014).

There have been several attempts to conceptualize interdisciplinary work as a process that comprises various phases. Based on his experiences at ZiF, behavioral scientist Sverre Sjölander breaks down the process of interdisciplinary collaboration into ten distinct phases.

From 'Singing the Old Songs' to 'Everybody on the Other Side Is an Idiot' the process eventually moves on to 'Getting to Know the Enemy' and finally to 'The Real Beginning' (Sjölander, Long-Term and Short-Term Interdisciplinary Work, 1985). Sjölander’s model has been repeatedly cited in international research on international research.

ZiF as a Place of Enablement

Drawing from this wealth of experiences and publications, we are conceptualizing and developing our services to further support interdisciplinary research. It is obvious that the challenges of working together in interdisciplinary settings remain quite similar, even with the ever-changing academic world. There is a lot ZiF can offer to support these challenges (and benefits), by providing time, space, and funding, by developing ideas for services like coaching, and by fostering the exchange on these (meta) topics.
