The Future of Musical Knowledge in the Age of Machine Learning

Visiting Group

April - May 2023

This group and workshop (27 - 29 April 2023) are dedicated to understanding what the future of musical knowledge might look like in the age of artificial intelligence. Despite its image of centuries-old tradition and stability, musical theory never stands still. It is in a process of constant change, often due to the emergence of new musical technologies. By carrying out collective close readings of recent papers on musical AI, the group will form an interdisciplinary perspective on developments that are culturally highly relevant, but are often discussed in exclusively technical terms.

During and after the workshop, participants will be invited to create a jointly authored position paper in which the outcome of the group’s work at ZiF will be communicated, focusing on possibilities for future change in musical knowledge due to new data and technology, and offering a pathway towards further study of this topic.
