The qualitative and quantitative composition of all metabolites of a plant (metabolome) depends on endogenous factors as well as abiotic and biotic environmental factors. Changes in the metabolite profiles have direct effects on organisms that interact with the plants. We explore the existence of metabolic commonalities in the response of various plant species to their environment using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS and GC-MS platforms and bioinformatics. In addition, particular interest is given to the impact of these metabolic responses on herbivores, pollinators and microorganisms in standardised laboratory systems and under natural conditions.
