At irregular intervals, the Theory Center initiates or supports the development of exhibitions based on theoretical questions. The exhibition focus allows for theoretical approaches to be experienced sensorily in space. With Reinhart Koselleck's figure collection, which is being catalogued at the department, we have material objects at our disposal that can be used for exhibitions in the context of research and teaching.
Reinhart Koselleck, who taught at Bielefeld University from 1973 to 1988, was one of the most important German historians of the twentieth century. He was particularly renowned for his history of concepts [Begriffsgeschichte] and contributions to a theory of historical times. However, few are aware of the importance of images and imagery in Koselleck's historical work - long before the 'iconic turn' began to be discussed in the humanities and cultural studies. Bielefeld University, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), and the Bielefelder Kunstverein will be exhibiting Koselleck's theoretical and practical analyses of the image from April to July 2018.
The joint exhibition draws on an enormous collection of images that Koselleck collected and photographed over many years. This collection is now preserved in the image archive of the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg. The exhibition presents a range of object genres reflecting Koselleck's historical research and theoretical thinking such as Koselleck's own photographs, cartoons, and drawings. It also shows manuscripts, books from his library, or collections of figures of horses or monuments. Hence, the exhibition casts light on a topic that Reinhart Koselleck was working on for many decades: the visual dimension of history and research on this dimension.
The individual exhibit places follow three important analytical categories in Koselleck's research - 'Layers of Time' [Zeitschichten], 'Political Sensuality' [Politische Sinnlichkeit], and 'Memory Sluices' [Erinnerungsschleusen]. These are presented in three 'spaces of experience': Bielefeld University's Department of History where Koselleck taught and carried out his research; the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), where he was a member of the board of directors from 1974 to 1979; and the Bielefelder Kunstverein, which he frequently visited as a long-term member.
The exhibition is a cooperation between Bielefeld University's Department of History, the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, the Bielefelder Kunstverein, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS), the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB 1288) Practices of comparing. Ordering and changing the world, the Centre for Theories in Historical Research (ZTHF), and the Faculty of Design at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. It is being sponsored by the Rektorat of Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University's Department of History and Centre for Theories in Historical Research, and the Bielefeld University Society. Students at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences helped design the exhibition and reflect with their own artistic work on the features of the Koselleck collection.
Finally, the exhibition 'Reinhart Koselleck's Images of Time' reflects a current interest in taking up Bielefeld's traditions in the humanities and leading them in new directions through the new Bachelor-Programme 'Art History and Historical Image Studies' starting in the 2017/18 winter semester, the founding of the Centre for Theories in Historical Research, and the setting up of a two-month Koselleck visiting professorship in theoretical aspects of history that will be filled for the first time in summer 2018.
