About me

The Chair of History and Philosophy of Medicine is a bridging professorship affiliated with the Department of Philosophy, the Department of History, and the Faculty of Medicine OWL. Together with colleagues in philosophy of science, history of science, and sociology of science, I contribute to shaping the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies of Science (I²SoS). In collaboration with the Chair of Ethics in Medicine and Law, I co-lead the interdisciplinary profile Medical Humanities. I teach History and Philosophy of Medicine in the medical curriculum and lead the corresponding AG15 at the Faculty of Medicine OWL. Within the GePhTh Faculty, I (co-)supervise doctoral projects in the history and philosophy of science with a connection to medicine.

My research focuses on the historical and epistemological question of how knowledge about disease has changed over time. I have a strong interest in methods—both in relation to medical research and to the philosophy of medicine and historiography. In addition to my chair at Bielefeld University, I lead a research group at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, investigating “Validation Practices in Biomedical Research” (https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/research/departments/max-planck-research-group-biomedical-sciences).
