Interdisciplinarity

The degree programme - sponsored by the four faculties in Sociology, Education, Health Sciences and Psychology and Sports Science - is characterised by its interdisciplinarity. Students can choose from a wide range of seminars. Information on the current range of courses is available in the electronically annotated course catalogue (ekvv).
In this way, students are familiarised with the various disciplinary ways of working and perspectives on gender. Students are guided in this process in the module 'Concepts of Trans- and Interdisciplinarity'. Here students learn more about what it means to research and work in an interdisciplinary way. They acquire knowledge about the importance of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity for gender studies.

In addition, seminars are regularly offered jointly by lecturers from different disciplines. This team teaching offers students the opportunity to experience inter- and transdisciplinary exchange "in action". Examples of such seminars in recent semesters include "Staging Medical Reproduction: Ethnography - Media - Drama" (Educational Science-Sociology), "Wars and (Dis)Order" (Sociology-History) or "Masculinities: Inter- and Transdisciplinary Perspectives" (Sociology-Literary Studies).

The interdisciplinary interweaving is evident in the three basic modules of the programme:

  1. Socialisation and Education:
Meaning of gender in relation to socialisation and education processes in different formal and informal contexts:
  2. Work and social transformations:
Interdependence of social order and gender order: gender division of labour and labour market segregation and gender-related structuring of organisations.
  3. Body and health:
Interrelationships and interactions of body, health and gender: addressing concepts of the body and their relevance to practice.

Finally, students can expand their individual profile in the compulsory elective area. Here, modules are offered from history, literature, education, sociology, sports science and the health sciences. These modules offer students the opportunity to specialise in one discipline.

Prof. Dr. Tomke König

"Interdisciplinarity is a special form of scientific practice. We try to bring disciplinary knowledge about gender and gender relations into dialogue with each other in order to provide appropriate answers to complex research questions. When things go well, disciplinary boundaries are crossed and broken in this way. However, this requires a great openness in thinking and needs to be learned." - Prof. Dr. Tomke König

Nerea Discher

"I particularly enjoy interdisciplinary studies because it is an exciting enrichment and I can learn from my fellow students. In this way, we can look beyond our own disciplinary horizons and discover new worlds in joint thought games." - Nerea Discher
