My research focuses on the philosophy of international relations. This subfield of philosophy deals, among other things, with questions of migration, state collapse, global poverty, the justification of military interventions, and their normative implications for the moral rights and duties of states and other international actors. This research is closely intertwined with neighboring disciplines such as international law, political science, and sociology.
In 2015, I received the Opus Magnum Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation for a monograph on moral and political compromises, titled Spielarten des Kompromisses. The monograph is set to be published in 2022 by Suhrkamp. Compromises involve actors foregoing what they consider the best course of action in order to pursue an option that is at best second-best for them. When moral convictions are involved, this becomes particularly challenging: How can we coherently describe the stance of an actor who seems to give up their fundamental moral and political beliefs? The monograph examines various dimensions of compromise, develops a "cartography" of them, and applies the findings to concrete cases.
From 2015 to 2023, I was a member of the directorate of the ZiF (Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Bielefeld). In 2017, I was appointed managing director. In this role, I am also a member of the Steering Committee of UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Studies).
From 2016 to 2019, I participated in the interdisciplinary working group “International Justice and Institutional Responsibility” organized by J. Nida-Rümelin at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). Since 2020, I have been part of the follow-up working group “Normative Constituents of Democracy” at the BBAW.
Since 2020, I have served on the advisory board “Democracy” of the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
I am also a scholarship mentor for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
