Artificial intelligence is becoming a competitive factor for small and medium-sized enterprises, but implementation often fails due to technical hurdles. A new initiative aims to change that: Bielefeld University has received funding approval for the “LLM4KMU” project, which is supported by the NEXT.IN.NRW program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The project aims to optimize the use of open source large language models (LLM) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The continuous development of large language models, also known as generative AI, has expanded the possibilities for businesses. SMEs in particular can benefit from automating their processes, leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs. The LLM4KMU project addresses precisely this issue and aims to offer tailor-made solutions for integrating these technologies.
The researchers want to develop best practices and set up an experimental platform to enable companies to use the technology effectively. In addition, the project is developing best practice guidelines to help companies better train and adapt their LLMs. This should make the models more reliable and reduce usage costs. An important point here is that companies retain control over their data because everything is based on open-source solutions that can be integrated into their own IT infrastructure.
A strong consortium from science and industry supports the project. In addition to Bielefeld University, are also involved semalytix GmbH, CLAAS Selbstfahrende Erntemaschinen GmbH, ellamind GmbH, ZENIT GmbH, primeLine Solutions GmbH and Matplus GmbH. They all contribute their expertise to make it easier for companies to get started with AI.
