Incentives for good teaching

"Good" teaching is increasingly moving to the centre of university policy and university efforts. In addition to some external framework conditions, the university teachers themselves have a major influence on such "good" teaching with their qualifications and motivation. With the help of the BMBF funded project, the motivational situations of professors and the incentives for "good" teaching are to be empirically recorded and interpreted and - based on this - application-related design proposals for targeted incentive systems are to be developed. Together with Prof. Dr. Elke Wild Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science, University of Bielefeld, and two project members, these objectives will be pursued over a period of three years (1 February 2009-31 March 2012).

The procedure for focussing the project is as follows: The induction process ("inplacement") of newly appointed professors will take centre stage. Firstly, the first few months of induction mark a phase in which crucial decisions are made and teaching/learning concepts are shaped. Secondly, this group is of central importance for the development of teaching expertise. Thirdly, there are good opportunities for intervention on the part of the universities.

The project has three objectives:

Descriptively, it aims to describe the incentive situation for the provision of teaching services from the perspective of newly appointed professors (and, as a comparison group, also of "old" appointees) and to contrast it with the view of HR directors/rectors.
From an explicative perspective, it aims to gain insights into the action-guiding function of incentives for teaching.
From a praxeological perspective, it aims to develop a frame of reference for influencing the behaviour of lecturers to offer "good" teaching.
