
The BI.research Conference is a new annual event designed to foster dialogue within our university. As a key element of Bielefeld University's participatory profile building process, it plays an essential role in shaping our academic direction.
Serving as a forum for generating fresh impetus for the further development of the university’s research profile, the conference brings researchers together to present concepts for promising research initiatives and to gather input from colleagues.

Who is taking part? The rectorate invites the entire university community to the conference. All researchers and teaching staff are warmly welcome—from professors and academic staff to student assistants, as well as students interested in research and members of technical and administrative staff.

The results of the ZiF workshop on the ethical, philosophical, medical, technical and participatory foundations of inclusive AI systems will be presented. In the workshop, the key concepts of autonomy, ability, assistance, decision-making and action will be clarified with regard to their use in the focus area. The theoretical concepts will be illustrated using exemplary situations (e.g. informed consent) in order to develop the basis for an interdisciplinary position paper.

Evolution and randomness shape the world around us -- from the seemingly random motion of molecules to the uncertainty of financial markets. In this workshop, we will explore the interplay between evolution and randomness from multiple perspectives, spanning the natural sciences, mathematics, and economics in an interdisciplinary setting. The session will feature talks and discussions by members of the focus areas ANBauEn, ESyMath, and QUAMU.

The panel focusses on inter-American and global entanglement and disentanglement processes in socio-political and ecological human-environment relations. The viability of the concept will be paradigmatically scrutinised in short contributions from the interdisciplinary research areas of 'Knowledge Orders' and 'Moral Economy'. Researchers from the natural and economic sciences, the history of science, history and cultural studies will discuss with representatives of UNIVERSAL & ConGeD.

Human creativity is evident not only in the artistic realm, but also, and perhaps most significantly, in our ability to find and reflect solutions to individual and societal challenges that go beyond established routines.
The workshop is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange on the nature of problem-solving strategies, as identified in such disciplines as computer science, economics, education, history, linguistics, literary and cultural studies, medicine, psychology, and sociology.

FAITH presents a session on the foundations and implications of human-AI teamwork (HAIT) in industry, society, and science. The session covers a panel discussion followed by a world café. Stakeholders from various sectors will discuss what the status quo is regarding AI agents that support us in the workplace, exploring questions related to how far these relationships can be characterised as teams as well as how the deployment of such systems can be expected to change the way we work together.

Microorganisms form complex communities that interact with plants, animals and humans (MDDW). These microbiomes contribute to differences among individuals within a species (InChange) and respond to experimental interventions. In ecology, environmental factors such as food stress and anthropogenic noise can differentially affect individuals. In biotechnology, microbiomes can be reconstructed from scratch, enabling interventions at the single-cell level. Can these approaches inform one another?

This session presents three interdisciplinary projects that are at the heart of the focus area REFLECT. In these projects, we analyze a) how families can develop critical thinking in using AI, b) how students evaluate the credibility of AI-generated outputs, and c) how to foster critical thinking through a video-based training intervention to be implemented in ki-campus.org. Together with guests from the focus area PINC, we will reflect creative solutions of critical thinking in the age of AI.

The roundtable will discuss the global challenges to democracy from two perspectives: First, are dynamics of de-democratisation also to be understood as de-particularisations, or do they rather de-particularise other ideas of political order? Secondly, are dynamics of de-democratisation constitutively based on challenges to certain ideas of political and social order, or are such challenges themselves contingent?

Research at the intersection of CoIn and QUAMU examines the interconnections between inequality and uncertainty. We investigate whether inequality generates uncertainty, whether uncertainty exacerbates inequality, and how these dynamics may mutually reinforce one another over time. The research further explores whether the resulting effects are perceived as opportunities for development or as sources of tension and conflict. Finally, it considers strategies for managing these challenges.

The process of individualisation arises from interactions between individuals and their physical, biological, and social environments. While many aspects have been studied across disciplines, a full understanding requires an interdisciplinary approach. In this session, contributions from various fields highlight the diversity of the InChangE focus area and address questions on the topic of individualisation.

The session covers three overlapping research topics, namely using multiple mathematical representations (ESyMath/MICOS), critical thinking in education (REFLECT focus area) and utilizing AI tools in teaching (FAITH focus area/CATS exploration area) in light of the shared question how the learning and teaching of mathematics can be improved through collaborative synergies in and between these areas.
