Bielefeld University provides a platform via which habilitation theses, doctoral theses and particularly qualified Bachelor's or Master's theses can be published electronically on the Internet free of charge and freely accessible in the sense of Open Access. This platform is PUB Theses.

The documents published in this way are permanently archived on the university's servers, automatically egistered with the German National Library (DNB) and indexed in the national bibliography or via DissOnline .

There is a trend in academic funding towards favouring requirements for electronic Open Access publication over print subsidies.
