Learning Spaces

At its five locations on campus, the University Library offers a wide range of opportunities for learning and working or simply for lingering. With their design and equipment, the approximately 2000 workstations support very different forms of learning and working methods. Concentrated self-study is just as possible as collaborative learning or communicative group work. There are also opportunities for undisturbed participation in digital courses or for relaxing and taking a break. Most of the workstations can be used spontaneously, but some of them can be booked. Here you will find an overview of the different learning and working spaces in the library.

Talking - Yes or No?

In addition to the equipment, the learning atmosphere is an important aspect when choosing the right place to study and work. In order to meet different needs, from concentration in silence to discussion and lively dialogue in groups, and to avoid mutual disturbance, we differentiate between three areas in the library:

Logo and rules for silent area

Talking is not permitted in the quiet area, smartphones should be set to "silent" to allow concentrated work.

Logo and rules for quiet areas

Talking is permitted in quiet areas with mutual consideration, smartphones should be set to vibrate.

Logo and rules for the communication area

In the communication area, conversations are permitted at a normal volume, as the rooms are intended for group work or online meetings/seminars.

Silent and quiet areas are located in the open workspaces or reading rooms of the departmental libraries and the BDZ. Discussion rooms, solo boxes and the barrier-free box are considered communicative areas.
Not only the site maps, but also the signage on site displays which area you are in.

Learning Spaces and Recreational Opportunities at the University

Three different workstations in the library

In the Learning Spaces and Recreational Opportunities portal, you can use various filters to search for a suitable place to work - in the library or elsewhere at the university. The entries on the working options in the library offer you a visual insight as well as detailed information on the equipment and possible uses of the rooms and workstations and where exactly they are located. If a booking is planned, you can make it directly via the "Book now" button.

Room and Workstation Booking

A booking is required for some workstations opportunities. Only students of Bielefeld University can make a booking. Bookings can be made directly here (in German):
