The Faculty of Sociology is pleased to learn of your interest in our programme and warmly welcomes you to Bielefeld!
The Erasmus+ programme was instituted to give students at other universities and institutions the opportunity to study at Bielefeld University for one or two semesters. This exchange programme is offered to students seeking to earn a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at one of the partner universities with which Bielefeld University has a cooperative agreement. In addition, the staff at these partner universities can participate in short-time teacher exchange programme with Erasmus+. A list of all partner universities can be found here.
The Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University offers a range of courses in both German and English in eleven different areas of Sociology. All courses are listed in the electronic commented course catalogue (eKVV) where you can find the complete course overview of the current and past semesters for all study programs offered by the Faculty, along with detailed descriptions as well as the list of courses taught in English at Bielefeld University.
For the Erasmus+ exchange, students have to complete a workload equivalent to approximately 30 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) points per semester. ECTS points can be earned by participation in courses, examination performances, and German language courses. The most common form of examination is a final paper. Information on how to write a final paper in Bielefeld can be found here.
The Faculty of Sociology offers international degree-seeking students the opportunity to complete an entire master’s programme in English. More information about the "International Track" of the MA Sociology can be found here.
Erasmus+ is a cooperation programme between universities based on mutual trust. As part of this agreement, each of our partner universities decide which students they will nominate for the Erasmus+ exchange programme. That is why you have to apply at your home university. For detailed information about requirements, please contact an Erasmus+ coordinator at your home university.
After you have been nominated by an Erasmus+ coordinator at your home university, the required data will be submitted to the International Office of Bielefeld University and you will receive an e-mail asking you to register online.
In addition to the Erasmus+ student exchange programme, Bielefeld University gives (teaching) staff members the opportunity to realize an exchange with the Staff Mobility Programme. Members of the teaching or administrative staff at our partner universities may receive concrete contacts and steps to follow from the coordinators at their home university first. Then you need to discuss the timeframe and activities of your mobility period with the respective coordinator of Bielefeld University. You may check which coordinator is in charge of your university here. Finally, you need to fill in a mobility agreement and get it signed by both the host and home universities.
