FAQ

Those interested in studying

Can I study the degree programme without knowing German?

No, the regular start into the first semester is only possible in the winter semester.

Can the degree programme be studied part-time?

The programme is designed as a full-time course. There are compulsory courses in all semesters. These take place on weekdays and on different days. In some modules, however, there are also block courses or courses in the evening. This makes it possible to arrange a part-time job.

Can the degree programme be combined with caring for a child or a family member who needs care?

Bielefeld University has been awarded the title of "Family-Friendly University". With the Family Service there is also a central contact and advice point for all questions regarding the compatibility of studies/academics/work and family. The programme itself is designed as a full-time course of study. There are compulsory courses in all semesters. These take place on weekdays and on different days. In some modules, however, there are also block courses or courses in the evenings that can be combined with caring responsibilities.

I am unsure whether the degree programme suits me. Where can I get information?

Make an appointment with the Study Programme Advisor of the MA Gender Studies or contact the student council Gender Studies . The central student advisory service of Bielefeld University also provides information on the question "What to study?"

I have been admitted to the degree programme but am not yet regularly enrolled. Can I still register for courses already?

Yes, this is possible. You can create a guest account  in the electronic course catalogue of Bielefeld University. Once you have received your UniID and the password for it, you can switch your guest account to the UniID, taking your eKVV timetable with you.

To enable those responsible for allocating places to allocate you, please give your guest account a name that makes it clear that you are a Gender Studies student. For example: First Name.Last Name.GenderStudies.

Enrolled Students

I would like to do an internship. What do I have to do?

Information about the internship in Gender Studies is available here.

How many credit points do I need for the Individual Supplementary Area?

This depends on which compulsory elective module was chosen. The compulsory elective module and the individual supplementary area must add up to a total of 18 credit points. On the page of the responsible Dean of Studies you will find all the necessary information

Are there compulsory formalities for term papers and master's theses in Gender Studies?

No, because Gender Studies in Bielefeld are affiliated to different faculties. Therefore, students have to ask the respective supervisor which formalities are desired.

The requirements for examinations seem so different. How do I keep track of them?

Actually, it's not that complicated. It is always worth taking a look at the module descriptions of the degree programme.
