Writing Differently: Exploring the Usefulness of AI tools

This workshop is part of the workshop series "The Evolution of Writing as a Cultural Technique and the Design of Writing Activities and Assignments in the Classroom"
Students use AI tools for their university writing but they often feel insecure about the best uses for the tools and how the tools can be incorporated into their writing process in terms of successful writing strategies, according to the findings of some early surveys in 2023. In this introductory workshop, we will explore and develop writing strategies as well as classroom activities and assignments with AI tools that will allow you to support your students’ use of AI tools in the face of the complexity they bring and the tools' rapid change and expansion. Our guiding question will be how and in which contexts the tools can be useful: When and how do can the tools offer affordances and perhaps even benefits for the students and for the classroom? And what is the great "usefulness" of writing in this context – how does writing contribute very productively to the skills of using AI tools critically and constructively? The goal of this workshop is to help you find individual answers and approaches to these questions for your own classes.
Trainer:
At Bielefeld University's Writing Lab, Dr. Sigrun Meinig supports instructors with the design of the writing and reading dimension of their classes. She taught academic, but also professional and creative writing in British and Postcolonial Literary and Cultural Studies and in practical language sections at the English Departments of various universities, contributing to and designing a broad range of class and curriculum formats. Her specialisation is writing in English; she worked at Leuphana University's Writing Center and teaches practical language classes in English as well as creative writing.
