Utilising the Potential of Writing Activities and Assignments in Your Classes

In this introductory workshop, we will explore how writing tasks and activities allow students to engage more deeply with the topics of seminars and lectures. Making your own design of your classes our starting point, we will discuss various formats for writing activities and tasks. By focusing on "writing to learn", you will be able to explore and design writing assignments that work for your discipline and suit your English-language class's or segment's learning goals without adding to your workload.
Throughout the workshop, you will have the opportunity to reflect on how writing activities and assignments in your class segment or class establish and further your students' academic writing skills. We will also discuss how you can support your students' writing process and their development as second language writers in classes where the focus is not writing but a disciplinary one.
Trainer:
At Bielefeld University’s Writing Lab, Dr. Sigrun Meinig supports instructors with the design of the writing and reading dimension of their classes. She taught academic, but also professional and creative writing in British and Postcolonial Literary and Cultural Studies and in practical language sections at the English Departments of various universities, contributing to and designing a broad range of class and curriculum formats. Her specialisation is writing in English; she worked at Leuphana University’s Writing Center and teaches practical language classes in English as well as creative writing.
