DHM soccer (men) preliminary round

On 03.05.2025, the preliminary round of this year's German University Championship in men's soccer took place in Düsseldorf. After the University of Vechta withdrew its team at short notice, only the teams from the University of Düsseldorf, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University of Bielefeld competed in this regional preliminary round.

The results:

Uni Düsseldorf 0:0 Uni Duisburg-Essen

Uni Bielefeld 4:1 Uni Düsseldorf

Uni Bielefeld 6:2 Uni Duisburg-Essen

Thanks to the two victories in the preliminary round, our team qualified for the final round. A first good step for the newly formed team this semester. The final round will now be held in mid-June and Bielefeld University will be playing for the title!

DHM Snowboard & Freeski 2025

From 15 to 22 March, David Giem represented Bielefeld University at the German University Championships (DHM) Snowboard & Freeski in Les Deux Alpes, France.

The event was organised by the German University Sports Association (adh) and hosted by RWTH Aachen University.

It was a great experience to compete with students from all over Germany and to experience the atmosphere of a high-calibre competition. David ultimately came 5th in the men's ski cross.

In addition to the race and the unique atmosphere on site, the focus was also on socialising with other athletes, which made the event something special.

Volleyball tournament 2025

Our volleyball tournament on 18.01.25 was a complete success!

Originally planned as a St. Nicholas tournament, the event had to be postponed to January this year for organisational reasons - but that didn't dampen the mood!

Six teams took part, including two teams that spontaneously came together from our player exchange on the day of the tournament. Ambition was high, but the main focus was on good humour and team spirit.

In the end, the "Netzflix & Kill" team took a well-deserved victory and was delighted to receive some great prizes at the subsequent award ceremony. But all the other teams didn't go away empty-handed either - there were prizes for every team!

A huge thank you to everyone who was there, who supported us and contributed to this great atmosphere!

We are already looking forward to the next tournament - hopefully again as a St Nicholas tournament at the end of the year!

uniRenner Hermannslauf 2025

At the beginning of this year, the uniRenner are once again starting their preparations for the Hermansslauf. The Hermannslauf, with its 31.1 km route from the Hermansdenkmal in Detmold to the Sparrenburg in Bielefeld, is considered one of the most beautiful scenic runs in Germany. The varied and demanding route is a challenge for every running enthusiast.

The training programme includes

- a training plan
- practice runs on the original route
- a joint three-day training camp in Bad Emstal
- pasta party the day before the run

The kick-off meeting for this year's preparation will take place on 10 January at 20:15 in/at Westend. Of course, all those who are not (yet) taking part in the Hermann this year or who simply want to run for fun and for their own health without any competitive ambitions are also cordially invited.

Anyone who is unable to attend the kick-off meeting this Friday can of course still come to training. From next Sunday (12 January) we will start again at the Schönen Aussicht / Sparrenburg. The latest information on dates and meeting points can always be found at https://www.unirenner.de/termine.php

DHM Judo in Duisburg

The University of Duisburg hosted this year's General German University Championships for women and men in judo, to which over 400 judoka from over 100 universities and colleges from all over Germany travelled.

Ten athletes from Bielefeld University also took part in this high-calibre tournament. Many squad athletes and national league fighters competed in this championship, as the German university champion qualified directly for the European and Student World Championships.
It is particularly noteworthy that the Bielefeld fighters not only competed well, but also placed very high. Three fighters sensationally fought their way through to the small final for third place. Unfortunately, in the very evenly matched fights and despite a top performance, they often lacked the necessary luck to win a medal. The women's bronze medal in the -57kg weight class was even decided between two women from Bielefeld:

3rd Alessa Barber -57kg

5th Josefine Koch -57kg

5th Nikita Krieger -52kg

7th Betül Yagci -70kg

7th Timo Günther -81kg

9th Vadim Schenk -66kg

On the second day of competition, the team competitions were on the programme. Freya Friedrich from Bielefeld and the team from the University of Bonn won silver in the Newcomers Cup.

ETDS 2024 in Southhampton

Dancers from all over Europe come together at the ETDS (European Tournament for Dancing Students). Teams from Germany, the Netherlands, England, Wales, Scotland, France, the Czech Republic and Switzerland took part.

There was a colourful mix of dancers in our team this time. Maurice and Caro danced their way into the Masters in Standard and into the Professionals in Latin. Dustin and Luna were able to dance their way through to the Masters in Standard, where they achieved 10th-12th place in the semi-finals! In Latin they finished 3rd in the Professionals and the bronze medal was their well-deserved reward. Pia danced in Standard with her blind date partner from Dortmund and reached the Champions in 12th place. Michelle danced with her partner from Zurich in Standard up to the Masters, where she just missed out on 15th place in the semi-finals. In Latin, her speciality, she danced all the way to the semi-finals of the Champions and 10th place! Dominik and his partner Romy from Münster were the last amateur couple to compete in Latin. They danced their way into the highest class (Legends) and narrowly missed the semi-finals in 15th place. Dominik, Anna and Tanja each had to compete in the Open class in their respective tournament disciplines. Anna and Dominik normally dance official tournaments together in Standard and Tanja in Latin. At the ETDS, however, all three of them had to compete in every dance with a different dance partner. Dominik ended up in 26th/44th place, Anna danced her way to 37th/45th and Tanja reached the final and came 7th out of 26 followers!

All in all, Team Bielefeld is very happy, we took home a few medals, but above all we had a lot of fun!

Hopefully even more dancers will come to Zurich for the next ETDS in June 2025!

DHM Swimming 2024

The German University Swimming Championships took place in Munich from 05/12/2024 to 07/12/2024.

Our 7 swimmers competed in the newly renovated Olympic pool. Some new best times were set. After a great race over 100 metres freestyle, Bette also made it into the final over this distance. Lara was also able to secure a place in the final. Unfortunately, it was not enough to secure a place in the final. A total of 50 universities took part in this year's university championships and the exuberant atmosphere on site made it a really great experience!

Bielefeld Beavers - Season 2024

Our Bielefeld Beavers competed in the College Series, the German university league in mixed fastpitch softball, and wanted to qualify once again for the final round of the best eight teams.

The start of the season in Aachen was bumpy: A win against the Braunschweig Scouts (17:11) was overshadowed by defeats against the Freiburg Warthogs (8:14) and the Aachen Aixplosives (1:16). Things went better in Braunschweig: three wins against the Paderborn Padres (16:12), Braunschweig Scouts (21:10) and Düsseldorf Dead Sox (26:8).

In Mainz, the Beavers narrowly won against the Gießen Gremlins (17:16), but lost against the Mainz Sputniks (1:11). Another exciting game against the Trier KamiKatzen ended with a win (13:12). The home game day was cancelled due to the weather, and only the catch-up game against Münster was lost with 0:15.

With six wins from ten games, the Beavers qualified for the final round in Trier. There they lost against the Mainz Sputniks (1:16), Münster Roadrunners (5:8) and Munich Krasshoppers (6:9). In the game for 7th place, they lost to the Trier KamiKatzen (4:15).

Despite the defeats, it was a successful season with strong individual performances: Annika was honoured as the best defensive player and Michael as the best offensive player. Overall, the team has continued to grow together and can look back on a fun-filled 2024 University Sports Service Bielefeld Series.

DHM Women's Football

Last weekend, the German university championships in women's football (small pitch) took place in Constance. After the long journey, everyone was able to relax in and around Lake Constance on Friday evening and recharge their batteries for the next morning.

The actual tournament then got underway. We were able to secure a place in the quarter-finals in the group phase with two wins (7:1 and 5:0). In the final game of the group phase, we were narrowly defeated (1:3). In the subsequent quarter-final, we unfortunately reached the end of the line (0:1).

Overall, we would certainly have expected more from the tournament, but we had a great weekend in Constance, had a lot of fun and were able to collect some memories that will stay with us for a long time.

DHM Half Marathon

Small race, big atmosphere:

The (half) marathon university championships took place in Salzkotten on 2 June. In relatively good weather conditions, Maximilian ran a personal best time of 01:45:30 in the half marathon and finished in 22nd place.

Compared to the last (half) marathon university championship in Hanover, it was a little smaller, but it felt like the whole of Salzkotten was lining the streets, as were the surrounding villages. All in all, a really nice competition.

DHM Triathlon

"Just try it out and go for it" - that was the basic idea of our group at the Volkstriathlon at Steinhuder Meer. After two cancellations due to illness, we started with just five people from Bielefeld University, only one of whom had some triathlon experience. However, by the time we checked in, our group's anticipation of the event was overriding. The atmosphere on site was great and the organisation of the various relay teams went practically without a hitch despite the large number of participants. Although we quickly realised that our preparation and equipment were rather poor compared to the other participants, we wanted to live up to our own expectations and gain experience for other triathlons. The swim in the Steinhuder Meer proved to be much more strenuous for us than expected and set a high standard as the first discipline, which we had to orientate ourselves by. However, the support of the spectators on site and on the bike course helped us to grit our teeth and keep going despite the unfamiliar strain. While the running and cycling were also strenuous, but at least they were more familiar, we also realised how important it is to be well prepared when switching between disciplines. The Volkstriathlon at Steinhuder Meer was an incredibly interesting experience, not least thanks to the fantastic volunteers who actively supported each and every one of us before, on and after the course. Overall, we are all happy with our individual times, which were between 1:22 and 1:39, and are motivated to improve them with more training and experience!

DHM Volleyball Men

The Bielefeld University volleyball team represented the Bielefeld colours at Leibniz University Hanover on 3 May. As part of the preliminary round, the universities (TU Dresden, WG Hannover, Uni Vechta, WG Braunschweig, Uni Ilmenau, WG Magdeburg. WG Jena) competed with us. We competed with a numerically decimated team led by coach Dr Kostas Velentzas (Dept. of Sports Science) and beat the hosts Hannover in the first game of the preliminary round, whose spectators and fans created a great backdrop. In the match against WG Braunschweig, who had several second and third division players in their ranks, we had a tough battle, which we narrowly lost. As a result, we narrowly missed out on the final tournament in Stralsund, but are determined to make it next year.

Coach Velentzas: "The boys did a good job. With more preparation, we would certainly have got further. But it was still fun!"

Felix Mittermeier: "It was quite an experience to play DHM for the first time. I'd love to do it again!"
