Gender Inequalities in Health and Mortality: Role of Biology and Social Factors
The second pillar of the G-HEALTH project investigates how men and women change their health behaviors after a stressful life event, such as a diagnosis of a new (incurable) disease, (acute) hospitalization, or a death in the family. Leveraging high-quality Nordic register data, we extend this research to examine whether and how the effect of a health shock on health behaviors differ between same-sex and different-sex couples.
Other studies within this project examine whether women and men report their health differently, and whether gender-specific patterns of health reporting are consistent across different levels of education and across race/ethnicity groups. To investigate whether reporting behavior modifies gender differences in general health, we apply a cutting-edge statistical method to the large-scale population-based surveys, such as the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and the U.S. Health and Retirement Survey.
