The Institute for Nursing Science at Bielefeld University (IPW) was founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting the expansion of nursing science and research on university level.
The IPW is an affiliated institute of the university and part of one of a total of eight working groups of the Faculty of Health Science (AG 6 - Versorgungsforschung/Pflegewissenschaft). It is financially supported by the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is sponsored by the Society for the Promotion of Nursing Science NRW e.V. (GFP).
The activities of the IPW aim at gaining nursing science knowledge that contributes to the improvement of nursing care. This involves, in particular, the development and evaluation of need-based and user-oriented care and intervention concepts.
Priority is given to questions that are grouped around four main topics:
I. Concept and instrument development
II. Inpatient care
III. Outpatient care and neighbourhood-oriented care
IV. Use of digital technologies in care
The main tasks of the Institute are to conduct studies in nursing science, to advise decision-makers and other actors in the field of nursing care and nursing policy, and to promote young scientists. In addition, the Institute organizes colloquia and guest lectures in cooperation with other research institutions in Germany and abroad. The research projects are commissioned and funded by federal and state ministries, health and long-term care insurance companies, foundations, associations or institutions, and other players in the health care system.
