Why is the topic important for research?
COVID-19 disease and its consequences are important for medical rehabilitation: both hospitalized and ambulatory COVID-19 sufferers show very different long-term consequences relevant for rehabilitation. Post intensive care syndrome, different symptom complexes and post-COVID cause limitations in daily activities and participation and a high need for rehabilitative measures. We would like to know which factors affect recovery and in what way, what role rehabilitation plays in this process, and how rehabilitants fare in the long term after their rehabilitation stay.
What are the actionable questions?
1. Retrospective study:
The first work package is called retrospective study. In this part of the study, staff, who have left the rehabilitation clinic some time ago, are examined. On the one hand, health data stored in the clinic will be evaluated after the rehabilitation patients have given their consent. On the other hand, people who completed their rehabilitation according to COVID-19 12 months ago will receive a questionnaire about their health and functioning. The clinic-stored data and survey responses are compared to determine the extent to which people recover from COVID-19 and what influences recovery. In addition, interviews will take place in which some patients will tell us about their experiences with COVID-19.
2. Cohort Study:
The second work package is called the cohort study. In this part of the study, people are studied who have just entered rehabilitation after COVID-19. In the following 12 months, patients will receive a questionnaire five times (at admission, at discharge, and after 3, 6, and 12 months). The questionnaire contains questions about health status, functional ability, services used, and other topics.
3. Expert survey:
The third work package is called the expert survey. In this part of the study, clinic staff
(e.g., therapeutic, medical, and social service staff)
will be
interviewed about their experiences in caring for rehabilitants according to COVID-19. Individual interviews and a group discussion will be conducted in each clinic.
Is there a data protection concept?
There is a data protection concept to which all project participants must adhere. The Ethics Committee of Bielefeld University has also given Eva-CoReha a positive ethical vote. Before the start of each survey, participants receive detailed information on how their data is protected and are asked for written consent.
