The cumulative habilitation project deals with the socio-pragmatic factors of the "failure" of grammaticalisation processes. Specifically, it deals with verbal periphrases in the Western Romance languages (Gallo-Romance and Ibero-Romance) that existed only for a limited time and then either disappeared completely from the language system (e.g. Old Spanish <tornar a + infinitive>) or were limited to specific variety dimensions or discourse traditions (e.g. French <aller + gerund>). The exact paths of propagation and loss of the constructions will be investigated by means of a detailed multi-factor analysis, which combines a thorough co- and context analysis with current corpus linguistic frequency and statistical calculations. In turn, generalisations about the success and failure of language change processes can be formulated via language and variety comparison.
In this cumulative habilitation project, the interplay of digitalisation and language reflection is examined. Taking into account the competence model of the latest educational standards (KMK 2023: 9), the areas of language awareness and foreign language-specific digital competence will be linked and subjected to an in-depth analysis.
The main objective is to determine how the emergence, verbalisation and application of language knowledge have changed through the use of digital media and tools. Of particular interest is the relevance of these changes for the teaching and learning of foreign languages at school, especially English, French and Spanish, in Germany.
The research methodology includes both theoretical-conceptual approaches and empirical investigations. In addition, practical implementation examples are being developed that show potential applications in foreign language teaching.
The first publications on this topic have already appeared, such as in Der fremdsprachliche Unterricht French (publication of Topic 173 on "Language Awareness", 2021) and in the article on "Sprachbewusstheit 2.0: Digitalised Language Awareness" in Standards - Margins - New Horizons. Canons for 21st-century Teaching.
