In the summer of 2017, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to establish the Medical School Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Bielefeld. At the same time, Bielefeld University was asked to work out a concept for this in close cooperation with the Ministries of Culture and Science as well as Labor, Health and Social Affairs.
The goal: "Medical education in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) should be aimed in particular at improving medical care in rural areas in the long run. For this purpose, general medicine and networking with academic teaching hospitals and medical practices in rural areas will be of particular importance in this project". (From the coalition agreement of CDU NRW and FDP NRW, 2017).
The concept presented was part of the assessment of university medicine in NRW by the Science Council. The result of the review was presented in October 2020. The Medical School received a fundamentally positive evaluation which allowed the concept to be further substantiated. With the appointment of the founding dean, Professor Dr. med. Claudia Hornberg, the Medical School officially began its work. In the winter semester 2021/22, the first students are to begin their medical training in Bielefeld.
During the build-up phase, the content work will take place within a project structure. Successively, the dean's office structure will also be trained and staffed. In June 2018, Professor Dr. Claudia Hornberg was appointed founding dean. With the appointments of the professorships, the scientific working groups are established and built up.
The establishment process is being accompanied by various internal and external advisory committees.
Beyond conceptual and academic issues, Bielefeld University is intensively engaged in the question of the structural development of the Medical School OWL at the South Campus location. Central guidelines for the planning are the tight schedule until the admission of the first students, the successive expansion of the Medical School in terms of personnel and space, and the proximity to the current main building, which is necessary from a conceptual point of view. In September 2020, the university has already commissioned the Goldbeck company with the construction of building R.2 on Morgenbreede.
Since December 2020, Bielefeld University has also been the official owner of building R.1, which had already been used primarily by the Medical School OWL since 2018. Previously known as ICB, the building is now called R.1, in line with the new logic of building designations at Morgenbreede and Konsequenz. On the website of the location concept Campus South you will find an overview of the construction projects. Further information on all construction projects of Bielefeld University can be found here.
