In the summer of 2017, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the foundation of the Medical School East Westphalia-Lippe in Bielefeld. At the same time, Bielefeld University was asked to develop a corresponding concept in close cooperation with the Ministry for Culture and Science, as well the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs.
The objective: “The medical training in East Westphalia-Lippe (EWL) is to be geared primarily to improving medical care in rural areas in the long term. To this end, general medicine will be of particular importance to this project as well as the establishment of networks with academic teaching hospitals and medical practices in rural areas.” (From the coalition agreement between the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Liberal Democrats (FDP) in NRW, 2017)
