Depression disorders are frequent (about 8 % prevalence) and their severity is often underestimated. In this project, we investigate the consequences of physical exercise as part of a therapeutic procedure on depression at different levels (possibly extended to self-instruction procedures). Cognitive effects and behavioural changes will be tested together with neurophysiological consequences that may result from the above-mentioned treatment supplement (physical exercise).
This project is based on the bio-psycho-social model of the genesis of depression. The proposed treatment supplement is derived from a depression model that focuses on neuroplastic processes and permits specific predictions about what improvements can be expected. Furthermore, this project offers ample possibilities to gain new insights into the neurobiological processes of depression and changes during treatment.
Finally, this project is a first step to strengthen the cooperation between the Neurocognition and Action Research Group - Biomechanics and the University clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Lübbecke (Mühlenkreiskliniken).
This project is one of five projects supported by the "Forschungsfond Medizin" of Bielefeld University and Ruhr University Bochum.
