Sustainability at Bielefeld University

The topic of sustainability is firmly anchored in the rectorate at Bielefeld University with the Vice Rectorate for Science and Society. The Vice-Rectorate is responsible for developing a sustainability strategy that builds on Bielefeld University's sustainability mission statement. It pursues an approach that implements the different dimensions of sustainability - ecology, economy & social issues - in the various areas of the university - research, study & teaching and operations.

In this portal you will find information on current projects and measures relating to sustainability at Bielefeld University, on the past participatory process for developing the preliminary sustainability mission statement, on funding opportunities for sustainability-related projects, as well as on persons to contact and opportunities to make suggestions.

At the centre of the cycle is the university culture, which is the central element of the dimensions of sustainability located around it, consisting of the ecological, economic and social aspects. All are linked to the areas of the university in the middle cycle - study and teaching, research and operations.

Campus tour Uni Bienen

Bees

When: 05.06.2025, 15-16:30, registration at: nachhaltigkeitsbuero@uni-bielefeld.de

Have you ever heard it humming on the university campus? If not, it's high time you did. There are currently around ten bee colonies on the outdoor biology grounds. On this campus tour, Nils Hasenbein, Student Affairs Officer for the Faculty of Biology, will give you an insight into the life of the university bees and their use in teaching and research. It's not just about beekeeping and honey: the orientation services, collection and pollination activities as well as the social and reproductive behaviour of bees provide plenty of material for exciting discussions.

Notes:

In the event of heavy rain or storms, the tour will unfortunately have to be cancelled.

The number of participants is limited, so please register as soon as possible.

In order to get an impression of your level of knowledge, it would be helpful for us if you could assign yourself to a status group (students, employees, scientific staff) when registering. Thank you very much!

Workshop with Jannik Heckmann (S4F): "From oil heating to heat pumps - education for sustainable development using the example of heating"

When? 09.07.2025, 2 to 4 pm

Where? Room U2- 139

Registration at: nachhaltigkeitsbuero@uni-bielefeld.de

After a brief theoretical introduction, participants can experience for themselves what education for sustainable development (ESD) can look like using the example topic of heating. As part of a "group puzzle", the participants use worksheets to explain to each other how natural gas, heating oil, wood pellet and fuel cell heating systems work and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. In particular, the emissions caused are discussed. The group puzzle is supplemented by a worksheet on heat pumps including an explanatory experiment.
