Shaping the leadership role as a professor at Bielefeld University

As a research-strong university with international appeal and innovative teaching concepts, Bielefeld University makes an important contribution to a progressive and participatory knowledge society. It is an attractive place to work and study, characterised by an open communication culture, living interdisciplinarity, diversity and the freedom for personal development. A successful university is also characterised by the successful interaction of its members in research, teaching and administration. This is achieved through the high motivation, creativity and energy of its staff and managers at all levels.

Leadership in the context of science is complex and has a great influence on the success of individuals and teams and on the satisfaction of employees. The basis for good leadership is respectful, appreciative and trusting interaction with one another.

Executive development occupies a special position in human resources development. Executives from science and administration bear a great deal of responsibility and make a high contribution to the further development of the university.

In order to meet these requirements, the Human Resources Development Professorship supports with target group-specific and needs-oriented offers.

Management guidelines of the central administration

As part of the WIR project (Culture and Leadership 2025), a joint mission statement for our cooperation was developed in 2021 in a participatory process with all interested employees from Technology, Administration and Services. The managers of the Central Administration have derived leadership principles from this. Here you can find the guiding principles for managers at Bielefeld University.

Specific guidelines for professional management work in science are currently being developed.
