The holder of this position is expected to represent the discipline of American Literary and Cultural Studies in research and teaching in its full cultural, geographical, and historical breadth. Connections to the field of Inter-American Studies are required, as demonstrated by a research focus in e.g. Latinx Studies, Border Studies, Migration Studies, Diaspora Studies, Postcolonial Studies, etc; a regional focus on the Caribbean and/or Latin America can potentially be expanded and deepened during the tenure phase.
The holder of the advertised position is expected to teach in all relevant B.A. and M.A. degree programs, including Inter-American Studies. Substantial experience in university teaching is required. To meet the demands of the degree programs, the successful candidate is expected to demonstrate their potential and willingness to offer courses that are informed by philologically-oriented literary studies as well as media and cultural studies and that provide an overview of American literary and cultural history.
The future professor is expected to have the following linguistic skills: English on a C2 (CEFR) level as well as profound knowledge of another language that is prominently spoken in Latin America/the Caribbean; expertise in this second language can be acquired during the tenure phase.
Willingness to cooperate with the other sections in British and American Studies is expected, as well as within the faculty in the Departments of Literary Studies and Cultural Studies, and across faculties, e.g. with the Center for InterAmerican Studies (CIAS). The future professor should be committed to the development of research projects and collaborative research proposals. For an appointment to W3, proof of successfully acquired third-party grants is required.
According to § 36 HG NRW, the prerequisites for employment are a university degree in a relevant subject, exceptional performance in academic work, as demonstrated by the superior quality of your doctoral thesis, suitable pedagogical skills, as shown in your educational background, as well as additional postdoctoral research achievements, which will be evaluated comprehensively in the appointment process.
In the case of an appointment to a W2 professorship, the appointment is initially limited to five years; following appointment, a target agreement will be formulated. In case of a positive evaluation in the final year, the candidate will be promoted to a permanent W3 professorship. The tenure evaluations are regulated in the statutes for quality assurance of professorships with tenure track (TT). W2 tenure-track professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an appointment option. Tenure track professors are offered a targeted personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and the preparation of the tenure evaluation.
